Financial Crisis

Textile and garment industry is a traditional industry in Portugal. However, this year, due to the financial crisis, especially the demand for major export destinations, the import volume of Spain in the largest export destination was reduced by 14%, resulting in a decline in Portuguese textile and garment exports.

In the first 8 months of this year, Portugal's textile and apparel exports were 2 billion 700 million euros, a decrease of 170 million euros compared with the same period last year, down 5.9% from the same period last year, while the number of orders decreased by 20% during the same period, and a large number of enterprises were forced to cut production and stop production.

Portugal has a total of about 4000 textile and garment enterprises, mostly in the northern part of the country, with 180 thousand of the employed population.

Textile and garment exports accounted for 12% of Portuguese exports in the first half of this year.
